Every year World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 by The World Health Organization. A specific health theme is chosen to highlight a priority area of concern and to create awareness about it across the world.
COVID 19 has brought to light that the world is an unequal place when talking of ‘Health Matters’, so the Theme for April 7 2021 World Health Day, is to BUILD A FAIRER, HEALTHIER WORLD.
It has been observed that some people are able to live healthier lives and have better health services because of where they are born, grow, live, work or age. While some groups struggle to make ends meet with little daily income, have poorer housing conditions and education, fewer employment opportunities, experience greater gender inequality, and have little or no access to safe environments, clean water and air, food security and health services. This leads to unnecessary suffering, avoidable illness, and premature death. It harms our societies and economies. This is not only unfair: it is preventable.
WHO is calling the leaders of all countries to ensure that everyone has living and working conditions that are conducive to good health. At the same time, it urges leaders to monitor health inequities, and to ensure that all people are able to access quality health services when and where they need them.
We as responsible citizens of our countries should try and help our governments in making these ends meet and acquiring the goals set by WHO.
