Protein is one of the most important macro-nutrient required in our daily diet. It plays many roles such as repairing and building body tissues. Proteins are the building block and we cannot function without them. However, most of us do not know our exact requirements and if we are having fewer proteins. In actuality, irrespective of our activity level, we all need protein. Our body dies to give various indications when we are running short of proteins.

Various tell-tale signs of protein deficient

Hair, nails, and skin health falls

Hair loss, hair thinning, frequent breaking of nails, dry skin, or nutrition-less skin are among the first few signs of protein deficiency. Amino acids in protein help absorb biotin, a vitamin that is essential for the health of skin, nails, and hair.

Fatigued mind

We get energy from food, however, for proper metabolism we need protein. They provide amino acids to produce neurotransmitters in the brain such as dopamine and serotonin. This helps remove mental fatigue and brain fog.  

Your body is going out of shape

The configuration of the body changes if you eat less protein than required. Lack of protein makes cells produce energy by consuming muscle mass. Hence this eating of muscle mass results in the deposition of more fats. This leads to a change in shape and flabby skin. 

Craving for junk food

Sugar and junk food go up if you do not eat enough proteins. Protein-rich food stimulates the secretion of a number of satiety hormones. This gives us a feeling of fullness. In the absence of those hormones, you land up doing binge eating or eating junk food.

Fatty liver

Protein helps in boosting the metabolism of the body. If you eat a lot of food but not protein, the fat can directly result in the accumulation of fats on the liver leading to fatty liver.

Swelling on hands and feet

In case of a deficiency that has not been taken care of for a long time, swelling/ inflammation can come up on hands and feet. This is a type of edema. Albumin and other proteins help in maintaining the fluid balance in the blood vessels. Low albumin can lead to edema.

Repeated falling sick

Deficiency in protein reduces the overall health of our cells. This leads to lowered immunity and hence falling sick more often.

Help maintain body weight

Protein help maintain appropriate body weight. This is because it helps in maintaining higher muscle mass. This leads to higher consumption of calories even at rest. This enables maintaining appropriate body weight and also weight loss at times. In case you are working hard but still unable to lose weight, you must try increasing protein intake.
