Wheatgrass is a common name in Indian households, as it is a ritual to sow the wheat grains on the first day of Navratri’s and to cut the grass on the last Navratri and offer it to the goddess. People do it very religiously but only for that period of time. Had they been aware of the benefits of wheatgrass therapy they would do it religiously all year-round.

Wheatgrass is a rich source of potassium, dietary fiber, iron, vitamin A, B, C, E, and K, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium. It also contains 17 different amino acids which include the essential amino acids namely phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, methionine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, and histidine.  These amino acids cannot be produced by the body in sufficient quantities and must be obtained through diet.

Hemoglobin

Hemoglobin in our red blood cells or more popularly known as Hb carries the oxygen from the lungs to various organs of the body. It contains iron in the center to which is bonded nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen. More the hemoglobin more oxygen your organs get.

Procedure

Take seven small pots. One for each day of the week. Fill them with soil. Wet the soil. Sprinkle some wheat on the soil in one pot on Monday, in the second pot on Tuesday, and continue to do the same till you reach the seventh pot on Sunday. Cover them with the soil with a light hand. Place the pots in the open but not in direct sunlight. Cover them with a damp gunny bag or any damp cotton cloth.  Water them daily to keep the soil moist. The wheat will sprout in a day or two. Remove the cloth or the gunny bag. Let the grass grow for six days or till you observe the blades forking to give a second blade. Pull out the grass with the seed. Cut the grass and throw away the seed. Sow new seeds in the same soil for the next six days. You can change the soil or add some nutrients like homemade manure or market-bought manure once in a year or when you feel the soil has got depleted of its nutrients and is not giving as rich a grass as earlier.

Wash and blend the grass in the blender with some water. Strain it, and your wheatgrass juice is ready to be consumed. If you want it even more nutrient add some homegrown tulsi, neem, lemongrass, mint, coriander leaves, aloe vera, or whatever you want. You are free to let your imagination go wild and come up with new ingredients. A small shot of wheatgrass daily keeps you healthy and fit. It prevents you from some serious ailments such as cancer.
